CANBERRA Oak Ridge honored for Safety Improvements

On January 19th, CANBERRA Oak Ridge received the National Safety Council’s Significant Improvement Award.  This award honors companies, locations and divisions that have at least a 20% reduction in injuries and illnesses involving days away from work, and that have maintained or reduced their number of fatalities as per OSHA recordkeeping requirements. CANBERRA Oak Ridge, along with the rest of the CANBERRA sites, had zero lost time accidents in 2014.

What caused such a significant improvement? According to Nathan Benson, Safety and Health Manager at CANBERRA’s Oak Ridge site, “We are reinventing our safety culture in Oak Ridge utilizing industry leading techniques to prevent accidents before they occur.”  First, a safety tracking map is being used to locate and identify all of the facility’s near misses, incidents requiring first aid and recordable accidents back to 2009. This helps Benson and the safety team to analyze trends and focus on areas where incidents are most likely to take place. An OSHA 10 hour safety training course is also being rolled out to all Oak Ridge employees – not just the safety team. This provides everyone working at the site with a common understanding of safety culture and practices.
